Fatema Mernissi (1940-2015)

Fatema Mernissi was a Moroccan feminist, writer, and sociologist. Born in Fes in 1940, Mernissi first studied political science at the University of Paris and Brandeis University before returning to Morocco in 1974 to teach at Mohamed V University in Rabat.

Mernissi is an internationally renowned Islamic feminist and spent most of her life analyzing the roles of women in Islam. She also used her experience of growing to up in a harem to write about the private and public lives of women in Morocco. Her most famous book, The Veil and the Male Elite: A Feminist Interpretation of Islam has been banned in several countries, including Morocco.

The real mistake of women was to let the memoir, the collective, the history, space of producing history – to let it in the hands of men.
